CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a cannabinoid that primarily develops within the resinous glands that coat cannabis flowers. It is one of many other phytocannabinoids, meaning that they’re plant-based. When ingested, CBD affects the Endocannabinoid System in much the same way that endo, or internally-produced, cannabinoids do – by binding with cannabinoid receptors to control the flow of inter-cellular information.

The Endocannabinoid System consists of a series of cannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes that help maintain homeostasis or balance within the body. Endocannabinoid imbalances may contribute to chronic conditions like persistent migraines, joint pain, IBS, mood problems, and more.

There is only one FDA-approved CBD drug and it’s intended for severe forms of epilepsy. Having said that, research suggests that CBD may be beneficial in other ways, as well. Hemp is simply cannabis with less than 0.3 percent THC. Cannabis with THC levels above this threshold are considered “marijuana,” which remains federally illegal.
