Guide to the Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoid System 101

The endocannabinoid system helps mitigate stressors to maintain balance within the body. The EC system regulates things like appetite and metabolism, pain perception, sleep/wake cycles, fertility, mood, and more. As such, stimulating the EC system may improve certain conditions that are related to these processes. One common way to do so is by ingesting plant-based cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, CBN, and so on.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The EC system’s purpose is to maintain homeostasis, or balance, within the body. It is composed of chemicals called endocannabinoids, plus special receptors that react to them and enzymes that break them down. Notably, the body is absolutely covered in cannabinoid receptors, which helps explain why supplemental cannabinoids have such vast potential and ingestion options.

Usually, the body creates endocannabinoids on-demand when the body experiences stressors like pain or turmoil. However, sometimes the body needs a boost due to poor EC system tone. Unfortunately, endocannabinoid deficiencies such as inefficient production or absorption can cause bodies to experience chronic pain, mood problems, sleep problems, digestion problems, and so on. Fortunately, adding Phyto cannabinoids such as those from the hemp plant to one’s diet may help stimulate the faulty system for improved health.

Endocannabinoids, Phyto cannabinoids, and Synthetic Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are chemicals that stimulate the endocannabinoid system. Each has a slightly different shape and affects the EC system slightly differently, but they all help regulate basic stress-related responses.

Endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that bodies produce naturally, include anandamide and 2-archidonylglycerol (2-AG). Notably, anandamide often called the “bliss molecule”, helps control pain perception, memory, and mood. Conversely, 2-AG, which is the most prevalent cannabinoid in mammalian bodies, regulates immune system functions to control inflammation.

Phyto cannabinoids are cannabinoids that develop in plants, specifically cannabis varieties like intoxicating “marijuana” and non-intoxicating hemp. Importantly, hemp, which is a type of cannabis with very low THC levels, can produce substantial amounts of CBD and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBG and CBC. Though hemp cannabinoids will not produce a “high,” they do stimulate the endocannabinoid system in much the same way that endocannabinoids do.

Synthetic cannabinoids, which scientists produce in a lab, also trigger the EC system. However, unregulated synthetic cannabinoids may produce adverse effects, especially for pets who tend to have very sensitive EC systems. As such, pets should only ingest natural, hemp-derived cannabinoids to avoid psychoactivity and other adverse side effects.
